The chandelier suspended from the ceiling of the dining cabin trembled, the crystalline beads hanging from each glass cupola rattling against one another. All the lights continued to burn brightly, casting a wonderful glow over the finely dressed men and women spread out among the tables. Silverware clinked against finely polished dishes and drinking glasses rang as they were set down. A buzz of excited conversation ran through the crowd of well-to-do passengers enjoying their dinners. Raucous laughter echoed from the smoking lounge adjacent to the dining cabin; although the doors were close, the smell of burning cigars was still vibrant. From the kitchen rose the scent of roasting ham and toasting bread. Audrey surveyed the people from her starboard-side table only briefly. Directly across from them, a newlywed couple sat across from each other. The lady, a young creature with blonde hair tied back into a voluminous bun, sat with her chin on hand.
